FAST FACTS & TECHNICAL SHEET OF NEVADO SANTA ISABEL 🧑‍🏫

As we like to say at Rutas de Los Andes, this place is not just a mountain; it is an ecosystem that teaches us about our planet's fragility. Here is what you need to know before your ascent:

  • Altitude: It rises to 4,965 meters (16,289 feet) above sea level, making it the highest point in the Risaralda department.
  • Strategic Location: It sits on the natural border between the departments of Risaralda, Caldas, and Tolima.
  • Unique Geology: It is known as one of the most unusual volcanoes on the continent due to its complex system of volcanic domes.
  • Biodiversity: You will hike through stunning fields of frailejones (giant rosette plants), which are vital for the water cycle in our alpine paramos.
  • Physical Demand: Rated as Level 3 (Demanding/Technical); it requires good physical fitness and proper altitude acclimatization.
  • Weather & Temperature: Ranges between -2°C and 5°C (28°F to 41°F) at the summit. Thermal layers and sun protection are mandatory.
  • Best Time to Visit: January, February, July, and August offer the clearest skies.
  • The Disappearance of a Giant: Nevado Santa Isabel is undergoing an accelerated glacier retreat. It is estimated that it will lose the entirety of its ice mass by approximately 2030. Currently, it has less than one square kilometer of glacier left, which still makes it the most accessible technical snow climb in the Colombian Central Andes. This phenomenon is rapidly transforming its ecosystem, marking an inevitable transition into a "paramillo" (a deforested, ice-free alpine mountain).

WHERE IS NEVADO SANTA ISABEL LOCATED?

The Nevado Santa Isabel Volcano is located at the intersection of the Risaralda, Caldas, and Tolima departments. It is important to know that it features two main peaks: a North summit and a South summit. The North summit currently holds more snow and ice, which is a key factor to keep in mind when booking your tour.

You can reach Nevado Santa Isabel through different routes, as detailed below:

  • The Potosí Sector Route: This entrance goes past the Otún Lagoon. It requires a 4-hour 4x4 Jeep ride from Santa Rosa de Cabal (Risaralda). Once in Potosí, you must hike for about 6 hours to reach the South Summit, which currently has very little snow cover.
  • El Cisne Sector Route: This is the route used by most professional agencies. It passes through El Cisne, the highest visitor center in Colombia at 4,152 meters (13,622 feet) above sea level. This location sits 3 hours away from Manizales by car and offers much easier access to the North Summit (which has the best glacier coverage). This guide will focus entirely on this specific route.

HOW TO CLIMB NEVADO SANTA ISABEL 🏃

DAY #1: ACCLIMATIZATION

Our trip started in the city of Pereira at 5:00 a.m., where our tour agency picked us up. As soon as we boarded the vehicle, we took the opportunity to catch up on sleep since we had to wake up incredibly early to pack our mountain gear and review the route 😴. During the drive, we made our first stop for breakfast. Even at the restaurant, we could already feel the intense mountain cold setting in.

We also took the chance to chat with the other travelers on the tour. We were pleasantly surprised to find many international tourists who were completely fascinated by the Colombian Andean landscapes.

After a pleasant conversation with our group, the guide informed us that our acclimatization hike would take place around a stunning alpine lake.

LAGUNA VERDE (GREEN LAKE)

Visiting this gorgeous lagoon was a moderate but rewarding hike packed with breathtaking scenery (4 hours total trek).

Once the hike ended, we were taken to our lodging where we had lunch and explored the surrounding area. In the afternoon, we gathered for our mandatory technical gear briefing. The guides explained how to properly use all the mountaineering equipment required for the ascent 🧗‍♂️, including crampons, ice axes, helmets, and harnesses.

Pro-Tip: When they hand out your climbing gear, double-check your crampons. One of the hikers in our group noticed the adjustment mechanism was jammed, and we had to swap them out before leaving.

After the briefing, we had dinner and headed straight to our rooms to make sure our headlamps were fully charged. We packed our core layering gear for the summit night: gloves, thermal base layers, waterproof pants, a fleece mid-layer, and a waterproof shell jacket (all of these technical items can be purchased at our online store) 👉 visit the shop here.

I must confess, many of us barely slept a wink out of pure excitement and anticipation for the summit push 😅.

THE PATH TO THE SANTA ISABEL SUMMIT 🚶🏼🏔

DAY #2: SUMMIT DAY

At around 1:00 a.m., the 4x4 vehicles arrived to take us to the trailhead. I admit we were all feeling anxious, wondering how tough the climb would be. It had rained most of the night, and the weather was still quite cold with a light drizzle, so we zipped up our waterproof hardshell jackets. Right before stepping onto the trail, the guide gave us our final safety instructions.

The initial ascent consisted of several rocky, moderately steep sections. After a few minutes, we started spotting patches of ice on the boulders. Soon, the entire landscape became completely blanketed in deep snow, so we geared up with our crampons to begin the glacier trek. As we gained altitude, the alpine lakes below looked smaller and smaller, beautifully contrasting against the vast forests of frailejones 🌲. After pushing through heavy rain and thick fog, we finally 💪 stood on the summit of Santa Isabel 😍!

Reaching the top was an overwhelming rush of joy—we couldn't believe we were actually standing up there 😮🤩. Despite the rough weather, the freezing winds, and the physical exhaustion, we made it. We felt deeply privileged to experience such a magical, raw environment. If you decide to take on this tour, savor every single second because it is absolutely mind-blowing.

🗓️ FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR VISITING NEVADO SANTA ISABEL

  • 🎟️ Book your permit early: If you plan to visit during a weekend or peak holiday season, we highly recommend booking your national park permits at least 2 months in advance due to strict daily visitor caps.
  • 🩺 Monitor mountain sickness: If you start experiencing symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or a severe headache during the ascent, you must inform your mountain guide immediately.
  • 🧥 Pack a proper technical layering system: It is vital to bring reliable mountain apparel, including waterproof pants, a hard shell jacket, and a thermal fleece. Remember to apply the "onion technique" (layering multiple thin technical garments to trap body heat rather than wearing one single bulky coat).
